One of the things we get asked often in HR is, “do you get all the juicy gossip from Christmas parties?”.
The answer is; we do hear some weird and wonderful stories… and our advice is – you don’t want to be THAT person.
Without a doubt every year there is the person who drank far too much, the person who said something inappropriate or the person that hooked up with the other person… There are multiple ways you can be THAT person, and while it does mean we get some stories, none of the options are pretty.
The Christmas party is a great time to let your hair down with the team, but don’t let the delusion of the free drinks get you – it is still a work event. If you do something outrageous – you’re going to have to deal with the repercussions. Very quickly an informal work event can become a formal meeting with your boss or HR.
It’s important to have fun but also be mindful of the setting you’re in, protect your reputation and maintain professional boundaries.
